For the past few years WildSounds has been fortunate enough to be a sponsor of the British Birdwatching Fair (Associate Sponsor) and the Birdlife International Preventing Extinctions programme (where we were the first species champion for the Spoon-billed Sandpiper!) not to mention our work with the Hawk & Owl Trust and the Peregrine nesting ledge on Norwich Cathedral. Beyond these headline projects WildSounds (and our customers) are finding other ways to help out.
Since we began our Commission for Conservation programme in 2004 we have donated an impressive £7533.74 to good causes. The current top 5 beneficiaries of the funds are:
|£3,701.71||Hawk & Owl Trust|
|£2,467.44||African Bird Club|
|£939.22||BirdLife International (various projects, including the Saving Species from Extinction : Spoon-billed Sandpiper project)|
|£203.84||Oriental Bird Club (various projects)|
|£89.96||Norfolk Wildlife Trust|
How have these funds been collected? A large number of organisations take part in our Commission for Conservation programme. They encourage their members and visitors to use links from their website to buy from WildSounds. Based on these sales, we donate 5% of most book & DVD sales and 3% of most electronic equipment sales to the charities nominated by the participants in the programme. (If you would like to join this worthwhile programme, or nominate a like-minded organisation that you think should join, please contact me at firstname.lastname@example.org).
Participants who helped raised money in the Commission for Conservation Programme include:
|Participant||Amount Raised||Supported Charity|
|Bird Watching Magazine Bookshop||£2,777.53||Hawk & Owl Trust|

(If there is a discrepancy between the total amount raised and the total amount donated to a charity - it is because we occasionally round cheques up. This is a list of others organisations participating in Commission for Conservation and does not include funds raised by WildSounds through our email newsletter, etc.)
Due to a sharp increase in bank charges we are unable to process payments for less than £10.00. The amounts represented above may therefore include small amounts of commission which has not yet been paid out to the recipients.
The sight of Duncan advancing on unsuspecting visitors and stall-holders at the British Birdwatching Fair is one few people will forget. With his enthusiasm, and several strategically placed collection tins (penny-pots) near our till points, significant funds have been raised over the years. Another important source has been a Virtual Penny-pot launched in August 2010. If you place an online order with WildSounds you'll be given the opportunity to add money to a virtual penny-pot (at the bottom of the third stage of the order form).
It is important to realise that these funds come directly from our customers, it is heart-warming to know that so many care as passionately as we do. The excitement and the buzz in our office when someone generously donates as much as £5 or even £10 to their order is palpable.
|Hawk & Owl Trust||£48.72|
|BirdLife International (Spoonbilled Sandpiper)||£454.54||£753.75||£2,041.28|
Physical Penny-pots after 2010. Amounts raised prior to this or at special events and signings have not been included in this total.
WildSounds has produced a number of pin-badges featuring Spoon-billed Sandpiper. We absorbed the entire cost of production, so all the funds raised in the collection boxes goes to BirdLife International and the Spoon-billed Sandpiper programme. In some cases we have donated badges to organisations (such as the RSPB, WWT, etc) and they have retained the funds donated through these badges for their own (charitable) purposes.
The amounts listed above are correct up to 3 April 2012, and this report was compiled in December 2012.
