For the past few years WILD Sounds & Books has been fortunate enough to be an Associate Sponsor of the British Birdwatching Fair and the Birdlife International Preventing Extinctions programme (where we were the first species champion for the Spoon-billed Sandpiper!). Not to mention our work with the Norfolk Wildlife Trust and their flagship reserve at Cley-next-the-sea. In 2013 we decided to support the British Birdwatching Fair by co-sponsoring Lecture Marquee 3 - in part due to there being no celebrity lecture at Birdfair in 2013. In 2014 we co-sponsored the Wildlife Author's Forum and we've done the same in 2015 through to 2019. The rest of our support continues unabated.
Since we began our Commission for Conservation programme in 2004 we have donated over £20 000 to good causes. The current top 5 beneficiaries of the funds are:
£3,701.71 | Hawk & Owl Trust |
£2,517.44 | African Bird Club |
£1,224.32 | BirdLife International (various projects, including the Saving Species from Extinction : Spoon-billed Sandpiper project) |
£203.84 | Oriental Bird Club (various projects) |
£92.86 | Norfolk Wildlife Trust |
How have these funds been collected? A large number of organisations take part in our Commission for Conservation programme (C4C). They encourage their members and visitors to use links from their website to buy from Wild Sounds & Books. We will donate 5% of most book and ALL CD & DVD sales and 3% of electronic equipment sales, made through this programme, to the charities nominated by the C4C participants. If you would like to join this worthwhile programme, or nominate a like-minded organisation that you think should join, please contact me: duncanATwildsounds.com (please send from your own email address replacing AT with @).

(If there is a discrepancy between the total amount raised and the total amount donated to a charity - it is because we occasionally round up cheques. This is a list of others organisations participating in Commission for Conservation and does not include funds raised by WILD Sounds & Books through our email newsletter, etc.)
With my infectious enthusiasm, and several strategically placed collection tins (penny-pots) near our till points at events, we have raised significant funds over the years. Another important source has been a Virtual Penny-pot launched in August 2010. When you place an online order with Wild Sounds & Books you'll be given the opportunity to add money to a virtual penny-pot (at the bottom of the third stage of the ordering process).
It is important to realise that these funds come directly from our customers, it is heart-warming to know that so many care as passionately as we do. The buzz of excitement in our office when someone generously donates £5 or even £10 to their order is palpable.

Virtual | Physical[1] | Badges[2] | |
Buglife | £5.00 | ||
BirdLife Malta | £39.79 | ||

BirdLife International (Spoonbilled Sandpiper) | £729.17 | £753.75 | £2,041.28 |
[1]Physical Penny-pots after 2010. Amounts raised prior to this or at special events and signings have not been included in this total.
[2]Wild Sounds & Books has produced a number of pin-badges featuring Spoon-billed Sandpiper. We absorbed the entire cost of production, so all the funds raised in the collection boxes goes to BirdLife International and the Spoon-billed Sandpiper programme. In some cases we have donated badges to organisations (such as the RSPB, WWT, etc) and they have retained the funds donated through these badges for their own (charitable) purposes.
