The Birds of Holme Bird Observatory 1962-2020
Steve Newman and Sophie Barker; illustrated by Dave Nurney
Holme Bird Observatory began monitoring birds present in and passing through its recording area in 1962, when Peter Clarke became the first warden.
This book reviews what has been seen at Holme over almost sixty years, with Steve Newman and Sophie Barker providing the text and Dave Nurney providing black and white illustrations of some 80% of the species seen at Holme.
The heart of this book is a systematic list, giving accounts of all the species seen in the Observatory recording area since 1962; it shows clearly that profound changes to the avifauna of Holme have occurred since 1962. Species that were once common are now no longer common, while a few such as Willow Tit and Lesser Spotted Woodpecker are no longer recorded. But set against these losses, there have been many gains including Little and Great White Egrets, Avocet, Cetti's Warbler and Mediterranean Gull.
Holme has been, and continues to be, a great place for birds! 218 pages.
