Finding Birds in North Spain

Finding Birds in North Spain

Updated 2017 version. Covers the areas north of Madrid, (except the east coast which will be covered in a separate book/DVD) from the Picos de Europa to Lleida, including the Spanish Pyrenees, Villafafila, Sierra de Guara, Belchite & Gallocanta. Gives exact details of where to find exciting species such as Wallcreeper, Great Bustard, Black Woodpecker, Lammergeier, Dupont's Lark, Citril Finch etc. 20 maps.

[This book is NOT a direct replacement for the previous title 'Finding Birds in Northern Spain' as it covers a more limited area in much more detail. Areas such as the Ebro delta and Extremadura will be covered in other books to be produced later.]

Compared to other publications covering the same area, this one:

  • Provides the most detailed maps - so you can easily find your way to the best tracks, footpaths, feeding stations, hides and bird towers.
  • Includes GPS co-ordinates to help you find the right turnings, parking spaces or viewing points.
  • Highlights the best areas only - and summarises the key attraction in the first paragraph so you can easily decide whether to read on or bother to visit the site.
  • Has a map on the inside cover which serves as an index so you can easily find any site in the book.
  • Is light and portable (and cheap).
  • Is complemented by a DVD showing you exactly what it's like to go birding in many of these sites.

Sites covered:

Picos de Europa - including specific sites where you can see Wallcreeper, Snow Finch, Middle Spotted Woodpecker, Rock Thrush and 'no-spotted' Bluethroat.

Villafafila - find out exactly where to see flocks of Great Bustard and breeding Lesser Kestrels.

Gallocanta - possibly the most spectacular gathering of cranes you can witness in Europe.

Pyrenees around Jaca - including the Hecho Valley, San Juan de la Pena, Astun, Riglos and Loarre.

Sierra de Guara - including details of several sites where you can expect to find Wallcreeper and three sites where food is put out to attract vultures including Lammergeiers.

The Zaragoza Plains - with specific details of 3 sites where you will find Dupont's Lark, plus other sites for bustards, sandgrouse, Black Wheatear, etc.

Plains south of Lleida - with details of exactly where I've seen Little Bustard, Pin-tailed Sandgrouse, Great Spotted Cuckoo, Roller, Black Wheatear and Black-shouldered Kite.

Serra de Salas - a mountain region with all 4 species of vulture, all viewable at close range from a hide at a feeding station. 36 pages.
